The Consular Section is open to the public by appointment, Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 12:30pm and on Wednesday from 2pm to 3pm. New Zealand citizens need no visa for short tourist or business stays of up to 90 days, under a 1961 bilateral agreement; moving to Italy means a national visa from Wellington.

Like every Italian consulate, Wellington takes bookings through Prenot@Mi (prenotami.esteri.it), the Foreign Ministry's official appointment platform. Register a free account first; slots are released in batches and the busiest services can disappear within minutes, so have your account, documents and calendar ready before you start hunting. Applying for an Italian visa in Wellington
Wellington runs a two-step process. You book on Prenot@Mi, then send all your documents by email to wellington.cons3@esteri.it; at the appointment itself the Embassy collects your biometric data and checks the originals. Family members of Italian, EU, EEA or Swiss citizens get a faster process and, in the listed cases, pay no fee.

- Fee
- €116 for a long-stay national visa (€50 for a study visa), paid in New Zealand dollars at the quarterly consular exchange rate (it changes on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October). Family members of Italian, EU, EEA or Swiss citizens are exempt in the listed cases.
- Processing time
- Italian law gives the office up to 90 days to issue a national visa (30 days for family reunification, 120 days for self-employment) and 15 days for a Schengen visa, extendable to 45.
