No. For visas and almost every other consular service you must apply at the post that holds jurisdiction over your place of residence, and consulates ask for proof of residence in their district (a driver's license, lease or utility bill). Prenot@Mi (prenotami.esteri.it) is the Italian Foreign Ministry's official online booking platform, used by Italian consulates worldwide for visa, citizenship, passport and other appointments. You create a free account with your email, then book under the service you need when slots are available. Demand at the busiest consulates far outstrips supply — slots are typically released in batches and disappear fast, so set up your account well before you plan to book.

The embassy is Italy's diplomatic mission in a country's capital; consulates handle services to individuals — visas, citizenship, passports, registrations. Many embassies also contain a consular section that serves its own district like any consulate. In the United States, for example, the Embassy in Washington, D.C. serves only D.C. plus Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland and the Arlington–Fairfax–Alexandria area of Virginia; the other nine consulates cover the rest of the country.

Four states are divided at the county line. California: ten southern counties (Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange, Kern and neighbours) belong to Los Angeles, the rest to San Francisco. New Jersey: thirteen northern counties belong to New York, eight southern ones to Philadelphia. Maryland and Virginia belong to Philadelphia except the Washington suburbs — Montgomery and Prince George's counties, and the Arlington–Fairfax–Alexandria area — which belong to the Embassy in Washington, D.C. It runs on a registry of 204 Italian consular posts across 130 countries that we verify against the official esteri.it consulate websites, with automated weekly re-checks for address, contact and jurisdiction changes. County-level results in the United States are resolved with the US Census Bureau geocoder rather than ZIP-code guesswork, because ZIP codes can straddle county — and therefore district — lines. Where a mapping is postcode-based and approximate near a border, the result says so.

The Consulate General in Miami, for example, states that appointments can only be booked through Prenot@Mi and are free of charge, without exception (source: Consulate General in Miami, consular services and visas page, read 18 September 2026).
