The London consular district
The Consulate General of Italy in London is one of Italy’s three posts in the United Kingdom, and its district is drawn county by county: Greater London and the City; Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Essex, Berkshire and Oxfordshire; Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire; Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire; the South West down to Cornwall; and Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. All of Wales, the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar belong here too.
The line with Manchester runs through the Midlands, so check it before you book. Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Northamptonshire are London’s, but the West Midlands county next door, with Birmingham and Wolverhampton, belongs to the Consulate in Manchester, as do Staffordshire, Shropshire, Leicestershire and everything further north. Closer to home, London’s honorary offices in Bedford, Bristol, Cardiff and Peterborough can take passport applications (biometrics and documents) for residents registered with AIRE in the London district.

Who the London consulate serves
Consular jurisdiction follows your residential address. If you live in the areas below, the Consulate General in London is your consulate for citizenship, passports, identity cards and AIRE registration. Visas work differently in the UK: the Consulate General in London handles every application in the country (see applying for a visa).

Getting an appointment in London
Like every Italian consulate, London takes bookings through Prenot@Mi (prenotami.esteri.it), the Foreign Ministry's official appointment platform. Register a free account first; slots are released in batches and the busiest services can disappear within minutes, so have your account, documents and calendar ready before you start hunting. Applying for an Italian visa in London
Italy runs one visa service for the whole United Kingdom, and it is based here: the Consulate General in London decides every Italian visa application in the country. Appointments are managed only by its partner, VFS Global, at centres in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. For any stay over 90 days you need a national visa, and once you arrive in Italy you have 8 working days to apply at the Questura for your permesso di soggiorno.
- Who can apply
- UK residents. London’s visa office covers England, Wales, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands, Gibraltar and South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands, and residents of Scotland and Northern Ireland apply through London too. Passports, residence cards and eVisa share codes must be valid at least three months beyond the last day of your trip; holders of a UK visitor (C-visit) visa cannot apply.
- Booking
- Only through London’s service partner, VFS Global, which adds a service charge. Apply no more than six months and no later than 15 calendar days before your trip starts.
- Where you apply
- In person at a VFS Global centre: London (ground floor, 8-20 Pocock Street, SE1 0BW), Manchester (50 Devonshire Street North, M12 6JH) or the joint visa centre in Edinburgh (1 Rennie’s Isle, Leith, EH6 6QT).
- At the appointment
- Every document printed, in original plus a photocopy where required. An incomplete application is not accepted and needs a new appointment, and your passport stays with the application until the visa is decided.
- Fee
- Paid in British pounds: cash or card at the VFS centres, plus VFS’s service charge, or cash only at the Consulate General’s own visa office. The national visa fee is €116 (€50 for a study visa) in Italy’s consular fee table.
- Processing time
- At least 15 days; up to 45 days for a Schengen visa and up to 90 days for a national visa. A Digital Nomad visa can take up to 120 days. Processing cannot be rushed.
- Getting your passport back
- At a VFS centre you can collect it or have it posted. Applications lodged at the Consulate General’s own visa office come back by post, in a prepaid envelope you provide with the signed declaration for posting passports.

No. The Embassy of Italy in London says that consular services are provided only by the Italian consulates in the UK, not by the Embassy: passports, citizenship, AIRE registration and visas all go through a consulate. In southern England and Wales that is the Consulate General at Harp House, 83-86 Farringdon Street, which also runs the visa service for the whole UK. The Consulate of Italy in Manchester. The West Midlands county, with Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Walsall and Dudley, belongs to Manchester, as do Staffordshire and Shropshire. The counties just south of it are London’s: Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire. London. Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire are all in its district, and so is the whole of Wales. Two honorary offices help locally, by appointment and with limited functions: the Consular Agency in Bristol (Avondale Business Centre, Kingswood), covering Avon, Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire and Somerset, and the Honorary Vice Consulate in Cardiff (8 St Andrew’s Crescent), covering Glamorgan, Dyfed-Gwent, Brecknock and the Hereford and Worcester area.
