The Manchester consular district
The Consulate of Italy in Manchester serves twenty counties across central and northern England: Cheshire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cumbria in the North West; all four Yorkshire counties; Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Northumberland in the North East; Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Rutland and Lincolnshire; and Staffordshire, Shropshire and the West Midlands county, plus the Isle of Man.
The southern edge is the one to check. Birmingham, Wolverhampton and the rest of the West Midlands county are Manchester’s, but Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Northamptonshire belong to the Consulate General in London. Honorary offices in Birmingham, Liverpool, Newcastle and Nottingham see people by appointment and can take passport applications, which the consulate then processes and posts to you. Visas are the exception: the Consulate General in London handles them for the whole UK, and its partner VFS Global runs a visa centre here in Manchester.

Getting an appointment in Manchester
Like every Italian consulate, Manchester takes bookings through Prenot@Mi (prenotami.esteri.it), the Foreign Ministry's official appointment platform. Register a free account first; slots are released in batches and the busiest services can disappear within minutes, so have your account, documents and calendar ready before you start hunting. Applying for an Italian visa in Manchester
Visas are the one service the Manchester consulate does not handle: every Italian visa application in the UK is decided by the Consulate General in London. You rarely need to travel for it, though, because London’s appointment partner, VFS Global, runs a visa centre in Manchester at 50 Devonshire Street North.
- Who can apply
- UK residents. London’s visa office covers England, Wales, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands, Gibraltar and South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands, and residents of Scotland and Northern Ireland apply through London too. Passports, residence cards and eVisa share codes must be valid at least three months beyond the last day of your trip; holders of a UK visitor (C-visit) visa cannot apply.
- Booking
- Only through London’s service partner, VFS Global, which adds a service charge. Apply no more than six months and no later than 15 calendar days before your trip starts.
- Where you apply
- In person at a VFS Global centre: London (ground floor, 8-20 Pocock Street, SE1 0BW), Manchester (50 Devonshire Street North, M12 6JH) or the joint visa centre in Edinburgh (1 Rennie’s Isle, Leith, EH6 6QT).
- At the appointment
- Every document printed, in original plus a photocopy where required. An incomplete application is not accepted and needs a new appointment, and your passport stays with the application until the visa is decided.
- Fee
- Paid in British pounds: cash or card at the VFS centres, plus VFS’s service charge, or cash only at the Consulate General’s own visa office. The national visa fee is €116 (€50 for a study visa) in Italy’s consular fee table.
- Processing time
- At least 15 days; up to 45 days for a Schengen visa and up to 90 days for a national visa. A Digital Nomad visa can take up to 120 days. Processing cannot be rushed.
- Getting your passport back
- At a VFS centre you can collect it or have it posted. Applications lodged at the Consulate General’s own visa office come back by post, in a prepaid envelope you provide with the signed declaration for posting passports.

The Consulate of Italy in Manchester. Birmingham is in the West Midlands county, which belongs to Manchester’s district along with Staffordshire and Shropshire; Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire, to the south, belong to London. Birmingham also has an Honorary Vice Consulate for limited services, at Birmingham Science Park Aston (Holt Court South, Jennens Road, B7 4EJ), open by appointment on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 to 13:00.
