The Toronto consular district
The Consulate General of Italy in Toronto serves most of Ontario, all of Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. The exception is the east of the province: the City of Ottawa and the counties around it belong to the Consular Office of the Embassy in Ottawa.
Honorary vice-consulates help across the province with limited services: Guelph (Waterloo and Wellington counties), Sarnia (Lambton), Sudbury and Thunder Bay. The Hamilton office has been vacant since December 1, 2025, and Niagara Falls is also listed as vacant, so residents there deal with Toronto directly.

Getting an appointment in Toronto
Like every Italian consulate, Toronto takes bookings through Prenot@Mi (prenotami.esteri.it), the Foreign Ministry's official appointment platform. Register a free account first; slots are released in batches and the busiest services can disappear within minutes, so have your account, documents and calendar ready before you start hunting. Applying for an Italian visa in Toronto
Toronto handles the two kinds of visa in two different ways. A Schengen visa, for stays of 90 days or less, is lodged in person by appointment on Prenot@Mi. A national visa, for longer stays, needs no appointment at all: you send the complete application by mail, with a prepaid Canada Post Xpresspost or UPS envelope for your passport to come back in.
- Who can apply
- Legal residents of the district (Canadians, permanent residents, and holders of Canadian work or study permits): Ontario except the City of Ottawa and the Carleton, Dundas, Glengarry, Grenville, Prescott, Russell and Stormont counties, plus Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. Applications are individual; families travelling together are the exception.
- Booking
- Schengen visas: appointment on Prenot@Mi, personal and non-transferable, and free. National visas: no appointment; apply by mail.
- By mail
- Include every document on the checklist for your visa, your email address and your full current address, and a prepaid, pre-addressed Canada Post Xpresspost or UPS envelope for your passport. Incomplete applications are returned unprocessed.
- Fee
- €116 for a long-stay national visa (€50 for a study visa), paid in Canadian dollars; the amount follows the exchange rate. Fees are not refunded, even if the visa is refused.
- Processing time
- Italian law gives the office up to 90 days to issue a national visa (30 days for family reunification, 120 days for self-employment) and 15 days for a Schengen visa, extendable to 45.

The City of Ottawa and the counties of Prescott and Russell, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, Leeds and Grenville, Lanark and Renfrew belong to the Consular Office of the Embassy in Ottawa; the rest of Ontario, Kingston included, belongs to Toronto.
