The Brisbane consular district
The Consulate of Italy in Brisbane has one of the biggest districts in the country: all of Queensland, from the Gold Coast to Cape York, and the whole of the Northern Territory. Visas, citizenship and passports for residents of both are handled at the consulate in George Street.
Two honorary offices bring some services closer: the honorary consulate in Cairns and the honorary office in Darwin can take passport applications from Italian citizens in Far North Queensland and the Northern Territory, including their fingerprints and photo. Honorary offices cannot issue visas or process citizenship applications, so a visa always means an appointment in Brisbane.

Like every Italian consulate, Brisbane takes bookings through Prenot@Mi (prenotami.esteri.it), the Foreign Ministry's official appointment platform. Register a free account first; slots are released in batches and the busiest services can disappear within minutes, so have your account, documents and calendar ready before you start hunting. Applying for an Italian visa in Brisbane
Brisbane handles visa applications from residents of Queensland and the Northern Territory, and an appointment booked on Prenot@Mi is required. The visa office is open Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 12:30pm and answers visa questions at visa.brisbane@esteri.it.

- Residents of Queensland and the Northern Territory. Visa applications can only be lodged at the Italian office that covers your place of residence, so someone living in another state applies there, not at Brisbane. Australian citizens need no visa for stays of up to 90 days; anything longer needs a national visa.

- Required, on Prenot@Mi. Visa office hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 12:30pm.
- At the appointment
- In person, with every document on the checklist for your visa.
- Fee
- €116 for a long-stay national visa (€50 for a study visa), charged in Australian dollars at the quarterly consular exchange rate, which changes on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October. Pay in cash or by Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card, in Australian dollars. The visa is free for the spouse of an Italian, EU, EEA or Swiss citizen.
- Processing time
- Italian law sets the limits: a national visa is issued within 90 days of the application (30 days for family reunification, 120 days for self-employment), and a Schengen visa within 15 days, extendable to 45.
