Italian Consulate in Sydney

The Sydney consular district
The Consulate General of Italy in Sydney serves the whole of New South Wales, from the Northern Rivers to the Riverina, plus Norfolk Island. The one exception sits on the ACT border: the towns of Queanbeyan and Cooma belong to the Consular Office of the Embassy in Canberra, which also covers the Australian Capital Territory.
Everything happens in Sydney itself. The honorary vice-consulates in Newcastle, Wollongong and Griffith are currently listed as vacant, and honorary offices in Australia cannot issue visas or process citizenship applications anyway, so visas, citizenship files and passports all go through the consulate on Market Street, open Monday to Friday from 9am to 12pm.

Getting an appointment in Sydney
Like every Italian consulate, Sydney takes bookings through Prenot@Mi (prenotami.esteri.it), the Foreign Ministry's official appointment platform. Register a free account first; slots are released in batches and the busiest services can disappear within minutes, so have your account, documents and calendar ready before you start hunting. Applying for an Italian visa in Sydney
Sydney accepts visa applications from residents of New South Wales only, by appointment booked online on Prenot@Mi. It publishes its own checklist for every visa we handle, and fees are paid on the day by debit card (Eftpos) or in cash, in Australian dollars only.
- Who can apply
- Residents of New South Wales, except Queanbeyan and Cooma. Visa applications can only be lodged at the Italian office that covers your place of residence, so someone living in another state applies there, not at Sydney. Australian citizens need no visa for stays of up to 90 days; anything longer needs a national visa.
- Booking
- Online on Prenot@Mi. The visa office is open Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 12:00pm.
- At the appointment
- In person, with every document on the checklist for your visa.
- Fee
- €116 for a long-stay national visa (€50 for a study visa), charged in Australian dollars at the quarterly consular exchange rate, which changes on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October. Pay by debit card (Eftpos) or in cash, Australian dollars only.
- Processing time
- Italian law sets the limits: a national visa is issued within 90 days of the application (30 days for family reunification, 120 days for self-employment), and a Schengen visa within 15 days, extendable to 45.
