The Melbourne consular district
The Consulate General of Italy in Melbourne serves two states: all of Victoria and all of Tasmania. Visas, citizenship, passports and AIRE registration for anyone living there run through the consulate on St Kilda Road, and visa applications from other states are not accepted: a Sydney resident, for example, has to apply in Sydney.
Tasmania has an honorary consulate in Hobart, open by booking (hobart.onorario@esteri.it), for the limited services honorary offices provide; honorary offices in Australia cannot issue visas or process citizenship applications. The consulate itself opens Monday from 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm, and Tuesday to Friday from 9am to 12pm.

Getting an appointment in Melbourne
Like every Italian consulate, Melbourne takes bookings through Prenot@Mi (prenotami.esteri.it), the Foreign Ministry's official appointment platform. Register a free account first; slots are released in batches and the busiest services can disappear within minutes, so have your account, documents and calendar ready before you start hunting. Applying for an Italian visa in Melbourne
Melbourne takes visa applications from residents of Victoria and Tasmania only, by appointment on Prenot@Mi. The consulate’s advice is to book as soon as you start planning, before you spend anything on travel, and to keep checking the calendar for cancellations if nothing suits. Every document goes to the appointment strictly in hard copy.

- Residents of Victoria and Tasmania. Visa applications can only be lodged at the Italian office that covers your place of residence, so someone living in another state applies there, not at Melbourne. Australian citizens need no visa for stays of up to 90 days; anything longer needs a national visa.

- On Prenot@Mi, as early as possible; check again regularly for cancellations if no slot suits.
- At the appointment
- In person, with the checklist for your visa and every document strictly in hard copy.
- Fee
- €116 for a long-stay national visa (€50 for a study visa), charged in Australian dollars at the quarterly consular exchange rate, which changes on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October. Pay by credit or debit card, in Australian dollars. The visa is free for the spouse of an Italian, EU, EEA or Swiss citizen.
- Processing time
- Italian law sets the limits: a national visa is issued within 90 days of the application (30 days for family reunification, 120 days for self-employment), and a Schengen visa within 15 days, extendable to 45.
