The Consulate General of Italy in Boston holds jurisdiction over the whole of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont — entire states, every one, with none of the county-by-county splits that complicate districts elsewhere in the country. Providence, Worcester, Portland, Manchester, Burlington, a village in the Green Mountains or an island off the Maine coast: if your address sits in one of these five states, your Italian consulate is at 600 Atlantic Avenue, and the state on your proof of residence settles the question by itself.
The only wrinkle is the sixth New England state. Connecticut is not Boston's — it belongs to the Consulate General in New York — so “Boston covers New England” is true only if you stop at the Connecticut line. Everyone else in the region books here. A simple map doesn't guarantee an easy appointment, though: like every busy US post, Boston releases Prenot@Mi slots in batches that go quickly, so have your account registered and your file ready before you start watching the calendar.

Applying for an Italian visa in Boston
Boston’s Visa Office issues visas only to permanent residents of Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont, plus students currently enrolled at a school in those five states. The order the consulate asks for is simple: confirm the visa you need, collect every document on its checklist, then book on Prenot@Mi and apply in person. Cancellations are frequent, so if the calendar looks full, keep checking.
- Who can apply
- Permanent residents of Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. A student living elsewhere can apply here while enrolled at a school in one of those states.
- Booking
- On Prenot@Mi, free of charge. Appointments made through third-party services are cancelled automatically. For a long-stay national visa, apply no earlier than 90 days and no later than 15 days before you enter Italy; the consulate recommends applying at least 4 weeks ahead.
- At the appointment
- In person, signing the long-stay application form at the consulate. Elective Residency applications need one complete packet per applicant.
- Fee
- €116 for a long-stay national visa (€50 for a study visa), charged in US dollars at a rate reset every quarter (see the visa fees page). Pay in exact cash or by money order or cashier’s check payable to the Consulate General of Italy in Boston; cards are not accepted and fees are not refundable.
- Processing time
- From a few days to 15 days, and up to 90 days for national (type D) visas. There is no fast track.
- Getting your passport back
- By mail with a prepaid, pre-addressed USPS Priority envelope with a tracking number, a copy of the envelope, and the signed mail waiver.

Boston — not New York, despite the pull New York exerts on the region. The entire state of Rhode Island sits inside the Boston district, so Providence — like every other Rhode Island address — handles its visas, citizenship cases and passports through the Consulate General at 600 Atlantic Avenue.
Five states out of six. Boston's district is Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont — each one in its entirety, with no county lines to check. The exception is Connecticut, which belongs to the Consulate General in New York. If your address is in any of the other five states, Boston is your post, full stop.

No. You must apply at the consulate holding jurisdiction over your residential address, and Boston — like every Italian post — asks for proof of residence in the district: a driver's license, lease or utility bill.
