From 2590 Webster Street in Pacific Heights, the Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco serves Northern and Central California, all of Washington and Oregon, the Mountain West states of Idaho, Montana and Utah, plus Alaska, Hawaii and the Pacific territories of Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa. Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, San Jose, Salt Lake City, Honolulu, Anchorage — every one of them books here.
The line that matters runs through California. San Francisco holds every county in the state except ten in the south — Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura — which belong instead to the Consulate General in Los Angeles. From Fresno up through the Bay Area to the Oregon line, you book through San Francisco. And because consulates only accept applications from residents of their own district — expect to show a driver's license, lease or utility bill proving yours — settle the jurisdiction question before you touch a single form. Get it wrong and your file is refused or redirected, and the months lost are hard to claw back.

Getting an appointment in San Francisco
Like every Italian consulate, San Francisco takes bookings through Prenot@Mi (prenotami.esteri.it), the Foreign Ministry's official appointment platform. Register a free account first; slots are released in batches and the busiest services can disappear within minutes, so have your account, documents and calendar ready before you start hunting. Applying for an Italian visa in San Francisco
San Francisco’s district covers more than 40 million people, and the consulate says plainly that it can be extremely difficult to find an appointment: Prenot@Mi is often booked out several months ahead. Check availability before you buy flights. You do not need your documents to book, only at the appointment, and once you hold a booking the system stops showing you newly released slots.
- Who can apply
- Residents of the San Francisco district only. Students count as resident at their university or their home address. Tourists, including B1/B2 visa holders, and other temporary residents must apply in their home jurisdiction.
- Booking
- On Prenot@Mi, free of charge. The consulate works with no third parties. Your appointment must fall within six months of your departure.
- At the appointment
- In person with every document on your checklist; an Elective Residency application has fourteen, and each appointment covers one adult and their minor children. Since June 11, 2025, US citizens applying for a study visa are no longer fingerprinted.
- Fee
- €116 for a long-stay national visa (€50 for a study visa), charged in US dollars at a rate reset every quarter, listed on the visa instructions page for the current quarter.
- Processing time
- About 7 to 15 days after your appointment. An Elective Residency visa can take up to 90 days; the consulate aims for thirty.
- Getting your passport back
- By mail only, in a self-addressed, prepaid USPS Express Mail envelope (no FedEx or UPS), with the Declaration for Mailing Passports.

There is no Italian consulate in the Pacific Northwest: the entire states of Washington and Oregon sit inside the San Francisco district, so Seattle, Portland and everywhere else in both states run their visa, citizenship and passport matters through the Consulate General at 2590 Webster Street — there is no closer Italian post to fall back on.
Count by county. Los Angeles takes just ten counties in the south: Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura. San Francisco takes every other county in the state — the Bay Area, Sacramento, San Jose, Fresno and everything up to the Oregon line. Not sure which county your address sits in? Yes — all of it. Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana and Utah are each covered in full, along with Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa. If you're in Honolulu, Anchorage or Salt Lake City, San Francisco is your consulate — and since long-stay visa applications are lodged in person at your appointment, plan the booking and the travel together rather than separately.

Plan on booking first. Visas and almost every other consular service at the Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco are handled by appointment, reserved through Prenot@Mi.
