The Houston consular district
The Consulate General of Italy in Houston is Italy's South-Central post, working out of Suite 1950 at 1330 Post Oak Boulevard in the Galleria/Uptown district. Its jurisdiction is unusually clean: four entire states — Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana — with no split counties or borderline cases to puzzle over. If your residential address sits anywhere in those four states, Houston is your consulate for visas, citizenship, passports and everything else Italian officialdom requires.
The surprise is usually Texas itself. Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, El Paso — people assume a state this size must have its own network of posts, but there is no other Italian consulate in Texas. Every Texan books through Houston, and so does everyone in New Orleans and the rest of Louisiana, in Oklahoma City, and in Little Rock. The practical consequence is distance: this is a district measured in flight times and day-long drives, and since long-stay visa applications are lodged in person, at least one trip to Post Oak Boulevard is built into the process wherever you live. Confirm the service you need, secure the appointment, then plan the travel around it — not the other way round.

Like every Italian consulate, Houston takes bookings through Prenot@Mi (prenotami.esteri.it), the Foreign Ministry's official appointment platform. Register a free account first; slots are released in batches and the busiest services can disappear within minutes, so have your account, documents and calendar ready before you start hunting. Applying for an Italian visa in Houston
Every visa application from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas is processed by the Houston Consulate General itself; no other office handles them. The Visa Office opens Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:00 to 12:30 (closed Wednesdays). For an Elective Residency or Digital Nomad visa, book a national visa appointment on Prenot@Mi and state which visa it is for.
- Who can apply
- Residents of Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas, plus full-time students at a university in those states. Applicants must be legal US residents: US passport, green card, a valid student or exchange visa, or a long-term US visa.
- Booking
- Only on Prenot@Mi; email requests are not considered. The calendar shows roughly the next six weeks and new slots are released periodically, so a trip months away is no cause for alarm. Each applicant books their own appointment.
- At the appointment
- In person, with a complete set of documents for every applicant (a family of four brings four sets).
- Fee
- €116 for a long-stay national visa (€50 for a study visa), charged in US dollars at a rate reset every quarter (see the general information page). Only a USPS money order payable to the Consulate General of Italy is accepted, and the fee is not refundable.
- Processing time
- Up to 90 days for an Elective Residency visa; for a Digital Nomad or Remote Worker visa, up to 120 days if you are self-employed and up to 30 days if you are an employee.
- Getting your passport back
- Collect it during opening hours without an appointment, or leave a return envelope (one per household is enough). Do not use FedEx.

The Consulate General of Italy in Houston holds jurisdiction over the entire state of Texas — there is no second Italian consulate in Dallas, Austin, San Antonio or anywhere else in the state, and El Paso, Fort Worth and the border cities are all included. Whatever your Texas address, your visa, citizenship and passport business runs through 1330 Post Oak Boulevard in Houston's Galleria district.
Yes. All of Louisiana falls under Houston's jurisdiction, New Orleans included, and you can't swap to a different post for convenience: Italian consulates only accept applications from residents of their own district and ask for proof of residence — a driver's license, lease or utility bill — as part of your file. An application lodged at the wrong consulate gets refused or redirected, which costs months. Build the Houston trip into your plan from the start; long-stay visa applications are submitted in person at the appointment.

Plan on booking first. Visas and almost every other consular service at the Consulate General of Italy in Houston are handled by appointment, reserved through Prenot@Mi.
