The Washington, D.C. consular district
Washington is the odd one out among Italy's posts in the United States: there is no Consulate General here. Consular work for the capital runs through the Consular Section of the Embassy of Italy on Whitehaven Street NW, and it holds the smallest district in the country — the entire District of Columbia, just two Maryland counties (Montgomery and Prince George's), and, across the Potomac, Arlington and Fairfax counties together with the independent cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church. Everything else belongs to Philadelphia. Baltimore and Annapolis are outside the line; so are Richmond and every part of Virginia beyond the close-in suburbs. That catches people who think of themselves as living in the D.C. area — the district hugs the Beltway tightly, and because consulates verify proof of residence (a driver's license, lease or utility bill) and refuse files from the wrong district, confirming your county is the first move, before you touch Prenot@Mi. Get it right and the Embassy handles everything from long-stay visas to citizenship and passports; get it wrong and you lose months restarting at the correct post.

Washington is unique among Italian posts in the US — there's no separate Consulate General; the Embassy itself runs consular services for the capital. Every address in the District of Columbia falls under it, so if you live in D.C. proper, this is where your visa, citizenship or passport file gets lodged.
Only two Maryland counties book with the Embassy: Montgomery and Prince George's. That takes in Bethesda, Silver Spring, College Park and the rest of the close-in suburbs. Partly. The Embassy's Virginia territory is Arlington and Fairfax counties plus the independent cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church — roughly the inner suburbs across the Potomac. Cross that line and you're in Philadelphia's district, which covers the rest of Virginia, Richmond included. The Embassy asks for proof of residence — a driver's license, lease or utility bill — so where you actually live decides the question, not where you work.

As at other busy US posts, demand outstrips supply — slots are released in batches and disappear fast, so have your account live and your documents assembled before you start hunting.
