The New York consular district
The Consulate General of Italy in New York is the busiest Italian consular post in the United States, and its district is bigger than most people assume: all of New York State — every borough of New York City, Long Island, and everything upstate through Buffalo — plus all of Connecticut and the 13 northern counties of New Jersey, including Newark, Jersey City and most of the commuter belt.
The New Jersey line is where people get caught out. If you live in Bergen, Essex, Hudson or any of the other ten northern counties, New York is your post; from Atlantic City, Camden or anywhere in the eight southern counties, you belong to Philadelphia instead. Since demand for New York appointments is intense, being sure of your side of the line before you start matters more here than almost anywhere else.

Philadelphia covers the 8 southern ones: Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean and Salem. The Consulate General's district includes the whole of New York State, so all five boroughs, Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island, Westchester and the Hudson Valley, and upstate cities like Albany, Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo all book their visa, citizenship and passport services through the consulate at 690 Park Avenue in Manhattan.
No. Italian consulates only accept applications from residents of their own district, and the New York consulate asks for proof of residence — a driver's license, lease or utility bill — as part of your file. Visa applications are lodged in person at your appointment, which is why the booking step matters so much.
