The Los Angeles consular district
California is split between two Italian consular posts, and the Consulate General of Italy in Los Angeles takes the southern share: exactly ten counties — Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura — plus the whole of Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico. One district, four states: San Diego, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Tucson, Albuquerque and Bakersfield all route their Italian paperwork through the offices at 12424 Wilshire Blvd.
The county line is where mistakes happen. Bakersfield feels like the Central Valley, but Kern County is the LA district's inland edge, so it books here; Fresno and the valley north of Kern belong to the Consulate General in San Francisco, along with the Bay Area and Sacramento. On the coast, San Luis Obispo County is the last LA county before San Francisco's territory begins. Consulates verify residence with a driver's license, lease or utility bill, and an application filed at the wrong post is refused or redirected — months lost over a line you could have checked in a minute. Confirm your county before you chase a single appointment slot.

Like every Italian consulate, Los Angeles takes bookings through Prenot@Mi (prenotami.esteri.it), the Foreign Ministry's official appointment platform. Register a free account first; slots are released in batches and the busiest services can disappear within minutes, so have your account, documents and calendar ready before you start hunting. Applying for an Italian visa in Los Angeles
Los Angeles accepts visa applications only from legal residents of Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and its ten Southern California counties. Appointments are booked on Prenot@Mi and must be confirmed 10 to 3 days beforehand: because of demand, the Visa Office cancels every appointment not confirmed by the third day before. For an Elective Residency visa the consulate advises applying 90 days before you plan to leave.

- Legal residents of Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and the counties of Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura. Bring the original and two copies of a valid driver’s license or state ID issued in the district; if you moved and have not updated it, add a current water, gas or electricity bill.

- On Prenot@Mi, free of charge. Confirm between 10 and 3 days before the date or the appointment is cancelled, and a new booking may delay your departure.

- In person, with the full checklist for your visa.
- Fee
- €116 for a long-stay national visa (€50 for a study visa), charged in US dollars at a rate reset every quarter (see the handling fees page). Pay by money order or cashier’s check to the Consulate General of Italy; cash only with prior authorization.
- Processing time
- Up to 90 days for an Elective Residency visa, with no rush processing.
- Getting your passport back
- By mail if you bring a self-addressed, prepaid envelope (USPS or FedEx) and the signed authorization form to have your passport returned by mail.

Check your county, not your city. Los Angeles holds exactly ten: Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura. Every other California county — the Bay Area, Sacramento and the Central Valley north of Kern included — belongs to the Consulate General in San Francisco. Los Angeles. San Diego County is one of the ten Southern California counties in the Los Angeles district, which means visa appointments, citizenship files and passport services for San Diego residents all run through the Consulate General at 12424 Wilshire Blvd. — as do those for the neighboring Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Imperial counties.
Yes — and it catches people out. Bakersfield sits in Kern County, one of the ten counties in the Los Angeles district, even though the city reads as Central Valley. The rest of the valley goes the other way: Fresno, and everything north of Kern, belongs to San Francisco. The coast follows the same logic one county over — San Luis Obispo County is Los Angeles territory too, so Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo book through LA.
They do. Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico fall entirely within the Los Angeles district, so Las Vegas, Reno, Phoenix, Tucson and Albuquerque residents all rely on this one post for long-stay national visas (elective residency, digital nomad, investor, student, family reunification and work), citizenship, passports, AIRE registration and notarial services. Bear in mind that a long-stay visa application is lodged in person, so the appointment itself happens in Los Angeles — build the trip into your plans.
