The Philadelphia consular district
No Italian consular district in the United States is harder to map than Philadelphia's. From Suite 910 at 1818 Market Street, the Consulate General covers four entire states — Pennsylvania, Delaware, North Carolina and West Virginia — and then the map gets complicated: the eight southern counties of New Jersey, most of Maryland and most of Virginia as well. Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Raleigh, Baltimore, Richmond and Virginia Beach all answer to this one office in Center City.
Three of those states are split with other posts, and every split runs against intuition. Baltimore is Philadelphia territory — only Montgomery and Prince George's counties go to the Embassy in Washington. Richmond and Virginia Beach are Philadelphia too; the Embassy takes just Arlington and Fairfax counties and the independent cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church. And in New Jersey, Cherry Hill and Atlantic City book here while everything north of the county line belongs to New York.
